Brandon “B Love” Hardin came to LA and did what most cannot — became a unique human. His style alone has set him apart from the beginning. One thing I remember about B is that he used to have this pair of shants (not quite shorts, not quite pants) that had duct tape all over the knee; he would wear them every day we skated. In hindsight they were horrible, but back in 1994-95, most of what we all wore was horrible. B has a coolness about him that is hard to find. His love of music, skating, women and combs drove his rollerblading success. His skating style is like no other. Not huge on the competition scene, but he does sport a gold medal for best trick from the first X-Games (farside soul to soul). An old school favorite of many pros today, B Love Hardin has set his legacy in stone, forever. B still lives in Venice Beach and is a die-hard Lakers fan. You can catch him balling on the Venice Beach courts most days… and hitting on chicks! — MO

Vert skating has never been an American thing, barring Mr. Edwards’ wickedness circa 1990-1994. European and Australian skaters soon dominated this field in the mid- to late ’90s. Their different styles and tricks were a refreshing change for the skate industry. One of these men was Denmark’s René Hulgreen. René was a lot different from most vert skaters — he learned to skate ramps on quad skates or “roller skates,” as most of you might know them. Also, he had a distinct appearance. With his long red hair, and almost always a beer in hand, he was a straight up Nordic viking! The inventor of the viking flip, an awkward mctwist, sort of a side-flip 540, was different, amazing and refreshing. René started skating back in 1988, and his career took him around the world, but after years of touring and traveling he has settled back in his home country and made his second favorite pastime — drinking beer — his second career. At age 39 he is a proud brewmeister and father. “Qua vos vado illic mos usquequaque exsisto beer.” It’s Latin… look it up! — Mike Opalek

New York City in the house! A big year for our man Fish gets even better with his first-ever cover shot… and you saw it here first. Billy’s interview was shot in NYC by long-time friend and roommate Jeremy Stephenson, and shows the diversity, difficulty and style of blading this East Coast legend has made his own. And not only did Fish bust out for the camera, but he breaks off a huge chunk of knowledge in his interview, covering topics from the crash in Barcelona, The Truth, his family life, living and blading in the City, and what it means for a company to be “skater-owned.” Hell, he even shares a story about Ryan Jacklone. In an issue packed with content we can’t even tell you all about just yet, this is one feature you don’t want to miss. Premiering at BCSD X, come by our booth to be one of the 300 bladers lucky enough to get their hands on the newest issue. See you there. — ONE

All right, ONE #14 (V4N2) is online now, but we’re mixing things up a bit. Instead of simply providing the download link to the PDF, we’re trying out the online publication browser Issuu. We think you’ll like the faster, easier viewing experience when re-reading Chris Farmer’s interview, or catching up with Ross Kuhn, or wrapping your mind around Dave Paine’s 15 Minutes one more time. Better yet, pass it along to anyone or post it anywhere you want to make a statement about blading. After all, that’s what it’s all about. #14 viewer embedded beneath the break, or click a link to get started. — ONE

The Nimh team went to Europe and all Brian Shima got was this cover! Sam Butt shoots and writes the story of their travels, offering his two cents on the increasing importance of being skater-owned and the energy of Montre Livingston. Joey Chase wasn’t on that tour, but as chance would have it he nabbed himself the feature interview in the very same issue. We sent Drew Amato to shoot in Florida during the Pow-Wow but Joey broke his ankle, so shooting was postponed until a hectic three-day stretch in San Diego. Called in for the job of capturing the action was NorCal’s Nick Korompilas, and the results are every bit as raw as Joey’s reputation. See all this and more when ONE Issue #15 ships this month. — ONE

We know, we know, it’s been a while, but in the ensuing months the ONE team has been busy building the new issue, and we’re glad to say it’s on its way. This time out Nimh tours Europe and Sam Butt was there to document the action, John Haynes Spotlights Blake O’Brien shredding the Twin Cities, Joey Chase gets a high-pressure interview shoot with Nick Korompilas, Carlos Pianowski gives us a Take 5, Marc Moreno shreds Barcelona for an Am Hour, Danish vert legend Rene Hulgreen gets his 15 Minutes, Mike Rios delivers a Folio, the largest Picks gallery ever, and too much more to list. Reserve your copy now, or be on the lookout for a copy at your local retailer in December. — ONE

David Allen Paine is 38 years old and living the dream… no, seriously, he is! He quit a very stable, decent-paying job — probably with a union — one that your parents told you to get after college, where after your 40 years of services you’re on Easy Street. But he wanted more out of life and wasn’t going to settle just for a decent job. Dave had dreams and he made them come true. At a young age he always wanted to skate and film. Growing up in the Philadelphia area is where he cut his teeth, and in the early ’90s, like most of you now, found that filming could be just as gratifying as skating. Now he’s been rolling and filming for 17 years. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Irene, and works for the action sports TV channel Fuel. — Mike Opalek

Geez, it’s been a long time since we offered up any desktop wallpaper designs, so we figured it was time to get back to it. Here’s a little number you might recognize from Alex’s Skater of the Year interview, shot by Brandon Smith. Little known fact: this was a shot we wanted to use for the covers (with the image stretching across the front and back), but logo placement and Alex’s location in the shot related to where the magazine folds made it impossible. Oh well, your monitor don’t care — post it up! — ONE

ONE #14 hits the warehouse in a few days with feature coverage of Minnesota’s Chris Farmer. The subject of praise and ridicule since he first burst on the scene, Chris has grown beyond the debate to discover his own voice and personality. And it’s all on display here. From family life, to his musical background, skate evolution and beyond, love him or leave him, you’ll want to read this interview and see these photos. Shot entirely in the land of 10,000 lakes, Chris worked with fellow MN native John Haynes to get his skating captured just the way he wanted it. And now it’s almost here. — ONE

There’s this guy I know who wears what most would call women’s pants. He also doesn’t shave much, sports a mullet and enjoys the color pink. He gets away with all of this by calling himself an artist! Well, he’s always said, “Randy Spizer was the first true rollerblader.” Meaning that the other pros at the time, who were much older than Randy, came from other action-sport backgrounds. Randy was a true roller, and the guy who wears girls’ pants was right! Randy skated and traveled all over the world, and he has inspired a planet just by being himself! — Mike Opalek

Chris Mitchell spouted off so many thought-provoking opinions in his 15 Minutes from Issue #12 that we decided to publish the entire text online. Long-time friend Mike Opalek gets Chris on the record about Box Magazine, rollerblading’s true roots, skating in the movies, the phrase “aggressive inline,” and why he thinks 2010 is the year that blading is going to resurface on pop culture’s radar. Find out a little bit about the self-described “robinhood of rollerblading” in this excellent read. — ONE

Mid-tour in support of their sophomore release “All Or Nothing” — following their successful 2005 debut “Young For Eternity” which spawned the hit “Rock & Roll Queen” — they were particularly easy-going during the sometimes-monotonous photo/interview process. After shooting with the band we spoke with singer and guitarist Billy Lunn, learning more about the band’s early days, recoding the new album with Butch Vig, and where they find inspiration. —ONE

During the ’94 migration to Los Angeles to compete in the National Inline Skate Series, or NISS, Tracy White was one Midwesterner who never left. At 18, he jetted from his hometown of Rockford, Ill., and never looked back. Coming from an ice hockey background you might get confused and think he’s Canadian. Or maybe you saw an older photo of him with his dreadlocks and all his ire and you thought to yourself, “No way, mon.… He’s totally Jamaican.” But no, he’s Midwest all the way (and don’t you hate on his Bears, or he’ll have words with you)! — Mike Opalek

Mike Opalek

I first met Mike Opalek in 1996 when he was in Ohio filming for the Senate video “Day of the Rope.” I was hanging out at our mutual friend Steve’s place when Mike came by, bringing along then-16-year-old Eric Schrijn and Louie Zamora. I suppose as first meetings go, it went pretty well. Mike was insightful and funny, and different than I had imagined. I liked his skating and I liked his writing in Box Magazine, and years later I’d learn that I wasn’t the only one he’d inspired. I’d also learn about all the cool stuff he got to do through skating, like be on posters for Nike in Asia, do stunts in “Batman & Robin,” thrash Devil’s Backbone in “Airborne,” coach international blade teams, not to mention that his first pro wheel was the very first pro wheel, and its graphics said it all: American Dreams. Read this conversation between Mike and long-time friend Chris Mitchell to learn a lot about the history of rollerblading.—JE

Back in December, Jeremy Beightol was kind enough to produce a piece of art to run alongside the editor’s LETTER for ONE #8. As the first issue of 2008, there was no doubt the issue was forged from a pioneering spirit of heading into the future, but a multi-part documentary on the History channel hosted by Tom Brokaw had pointed out that we were at the threshold of the 40th anniversary of a seminal time in American history—1968. This realization quickly added the key ingredients of inspiration to the editorial concept, and so described to the artist with broad strokes of late-’60s civil unrest, the rise of commercialism and corporatism, War(s) and their industry, and how it all paralleled today’s current events, this is what Jeremy’s imagination spit out. Brooke Howard-Smith

Perhaps better known for his enormous and engaging personality than his skills on wheels, Brooke Howard-Smith was not only one of the first skaters to make the long journey to California in the early ’90s, but he proved himself to be one of the most influential. As a founding owner of Senate he experienced the rollerblading boom—if not from the driver’s seat, then at least with a foot on the gas—like few others, learning along the way the benefits of shock marketing, the pitfalls of corporate ownership, and how to skip town when the mood is right. A consummate showman, Brooke’s appearances in early videos such as “The Hoax,” and “Hoax II” now serve as telling foreshadowing of the career he’s carved out for himself in his homeland of New Zealand where he hosts several television shows, and accessorizes his arm with the likeness of a former twice-crowned Miss New Zealand, now his fiance. ONE regular Mike Opalek went to NZ for a month to visit his old friend, and was kind enough to come back with this interview.

You know how when you watch a skate video you tend to memorize the whole thing? The tricks, the order of the sections, the audio from the DVD menu, even the commercials? Well, those commercials are often just as much work as what you see in the video itself. A long drawn out process of importing clips and arranging pieces on a timeline that, in the end, lasts only 30 seconds or so onscreen…

The name Evan Stone may be unknown to some rollerbladers, but his work in rollerblading is legendary. As the man responsible for creating the heavily-influential “Hoax” and “Hoax 2″ videos, it was Evan’s vision of rollerblading—both as a sport and lifestyle—that was packaged up and delivered to tens of thousands of skaters around the world at the height of the industry’s popularity during the early ’90s. He captured the attitude and passion of characters like Arlo Eisenberg, Brooke Howard-Smith, B Love, and Brian Smith, which set into motion a series of events that defined the rollerblading identity. From his early days filming skating and working with MTV to creating programming for broadcast television, Evan still remembers the excitement surrounding “Hoax.” Here’s some of what he told Mike Opalek during his interview.

So it’s a good step forward for everybody?
Well, yeah, if you call living homeless on a couch a good step forward.
