One of our favorite aspects of the SKATER OF THE YEAR process is watching the blade community make quantifiable decisions. We asked you to type your favorite blader’s name into a box. We tallied those responses and found the skaters with the most votes. Now we are once again proud to announce the TOP 10 FINALISTS. These are the ten bladers more people nominated than anyone else. Now you need to click on the voting “card” of the skater you think most deserves the honor of being voted champ, then click the SUBMIT button to make it official. — ONE

Sometimes a timeline preview turns into an edit, and this is one of those times. After a meet up at Carmel Valley Skatepark we got kicked out of and sessioned a couple street spots with Louie Zamora, Nick Wood, Hayden Ball, Steve Steinmetz, Damien Wilson and Lyle Shivak. Good times. — ONE

BLADE LIFE

Although most people may have heard about you by now, who are you? Why are you being interviewed for ONE?
Well, I would be one Shane Alexander Conn, residing in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I would assume that I am being interviewed by ONE because I’m doing something decent on my blades.

You lived in Pittsburgh your entire life, how has the Steel City shaped who you are today?
I can’t even picture myself growing up anywhere else. I wouldn’t have wanted to either, I wouldn’t be who I am today without this town. Pittsburgh is the greatest place I have ever been to, and I am proud to be from here.

PHOTO JOURNAL

Ryan Parker is an impressive up and coming blader. Growing up in Pittsburg, PA, Ryan was blessed with talented friends but suffered from a lack of quality spots. A little more than a month ago, Ryan moved out to San Diego in order to get away from the cold and have the chance to blade all year long. As a blader who has overcome impossible odds, Parker is an extraordinary athlete with an immense vocabulary consisting of doing tricks both ways, and negative. His style and desire for perfection is unlike anyone else I have ever met. Driven for perfection, Ryan is going to make an impact on the Southern San Diego skate scene. Expect to see a lot more of him as we continue to mine and film our way through California.

One afternoon we headed over to the world famous Chicano Park ledges to film a clip and capture this shot. The photo was taken at 1/250, a nice midrange f stop of 5.0, and with the California standard ISO of 100. I set my Picture Style to Neutral for the most dynamic range possible when later editing the photo; therefore I can adjust the colors any way I want.

Doomtree is a seven-member musical collective hailing from Minnesota. The members include: P.O.S, Dessa, Sims, Cecil Otter, Mike Mictlan, Lazerbeak, and Paper Tiger. Tomorrow they launch the US tour in support of their second album, No Kings. We’ll be meeting up with them next week when they play San Diego, but in the meantime here’s a look at the music video they just dropped today for “Bangarang.”

Start off telling everyone your name, your age, and how long you’ve been blading.
My name is Hayden Ball, I’m 26 years old, and I’ve been blading since I was 12.

How about you and me; do you remember when we met? How long ago was it?
I met you the when I was 19, like the first year I moved to San Diego. I think we met at Poway skatepark, or getting a ‘sandi’ one day with Ryan Schude.

You told me you moved to San Diego because of your cousin and Ryan Schude. Tell us about how you got to know Ryan?
I met Ryan Schude when I was 16, in Reno, where I grew up. He was in town with Pat Lennon and Sean Cullen. They came to skate with my friends Mike Choley and the Burke brothers. I was pumped to be skating with that group!

PHOTO JOURNAL

This shot was snapped during the first fully-attended “Team Barb” weekend down in Essex. With Bates, Joey, Adam, Hammond, Jimmy and I down at Barb HQ for the whole weekend, a lot of good times were had, and some legendary stories were born, but they are for another time. This front unity to back savannah was laced on Sunday while I was trying to recover from an evil hangover. I’m sure hanging from a tree to get the shot didn’t, help but it definitely resulted in a sick shot. I captured it with my Sigma 18-55mm lens and two Canon 540EZs (set at 1/4th and 1/8th power) positioned to the left and right of the rail. — Sam Cooper
